The African Union launched the Africa Credit Rating Agency in Port Louis, Mauritius, Reuters reports.

AfCRA is intended to assess sovereigns, financial institutions and companies with greater regional context. Established agencies reject allegations that their methods unfairly penalise Africa.

The agency’s independence and credibility will need to be demonstrated over time. Its launch does not itself guarantee lower borrowing costs.

WHY IT MATTERS

The new agency adds a continental perspective to credit assessment, with independence and credibility still to be demonstrated.
