ECOWAS, the European Union and GIZ held a September 29–30 workshop in Abuja to begin implementation of the Regional Energy Governance and Information System in West Africa.
The initiative supports national implementation of regional energy policies and improvements to energy statistics. Participants included regional power-pool, renewable-energy and electricity-regulation institutions.
The programme aims to improve planning and cross-border electricity cooperation. The workshop marked the start of implementation rather than the completion of new generating capacity.
Energy statistics and policy coordination are part of planning regional electricity cooperation.
