The US International Development Finance Corporation announced plans to invest up to $155m in African digital infrastructure provider WIOCC, Reuters reports.

The Johannesburg-headquartered company operates cables, fibre networks and data centres across more than 30 African countries.

DFC says the equity investment will support infrastructure expansion alongside other investors. The announcement is a financing commitment, not proof that every planned facility has been completed.

WHY IT MATTERS

The planned funding targets the cables, fibre and data centres that underpin digital services.
