Regional integration deserves coverage beyond declarations of ambition. Our view is that a trade policy becomes easier to assess when reporting follows a business through the rules it must use. The African Union’s AfCFTA manual connects origin criteria with preferential tariff eligibility and certification procedures.
That creates a useful starting point for journalists: choose a product, identify the applicable rule and explain what evidence a producer would need. The aim should be a clear account of the process, with unresolved questions directed to the responsible authorities.
Public explanations should also distinguish the existence of a framework from evidence that a particular company can use it successfully. We would ask about practical understanding and implementation before treating a policy announcement as a commercial result. A manufacturer’s experience could illuminate the story, provided its claims were checked.
This is an editorial argument for closer scrutiny of delivery, not a finding about a specific border or customs authority. Continental goals deserve attention; the details that let businesses act on them deserve equal space.
Following a product through trade procedures offers a concrete way to examine the delivery of regional policy.
